"Upset the consultant left without seeing me"

About: Wrightington Hospital

(as the patient),

I had an appointment in the out patient department in November, I arrived for my appointment on time and took a seat in the waiting room. I'd been there many times before and so was used to every clinic running late.

I had been waiting for about an hour and a half when I saw my consultants with whom I had my appointment casually walk past me, I thought nothing of it and continued to wait.

I waited about another half hour when I was called through to the clinic area, where I was instructed to wait in one of the clinic rooms, I waited there approx 10 mins when a doctor I had never seen before entered the room. He apologised for my wait but then said that my consultant had left for the day and had gone home.

I was very upset as this was the first appointment I had been given since I had my operation in April, 7 months earlier, despite my gp writing to the consultant on three occasions to ask why I hadn't been seen.

Please accept our apologies that you did not see the Consultant in clinic if this was your expectation. By way of explanation the Orthopaedic Surgeons work within teams and therefore you would not always see the consultant on each occasion but could see a member of that team. However, on attending clinic you could advise the clerk, when booking in on reception, that you wish to see the consultant personally and if at all possible this then could be allocated accordingly.

Kind regards
