"Over a week now - condition is getting worse"

About: Whipps Cross University Hospital

Anything else?

I have been to a few hospitals in my time, esp as we have had our first child recently. This time I have been at WhippsX for over a week now looking after my Dad who came in for a serious infection they still don't know the cause of:

Cleanliness - what you would expect from a hospital. Have seen some full bin bags lying round, but hygiene seems to be priority.

Staff co-operation - no communication between departments, or even within the same ward. e.g. Told the nurse my dad needs pureed food as he can't eat any solids with this condition - the next day solid food appeared - asked again - they said yes - the next day solid food appeared... Just given up asking for that now. My dad has been here for over a week now - when he first came in they did a few blood tests, etc, but now they need to do the tests all over again because they different departments don't work together properly. All patient notes are kept in pre-historic paper documentation - no wonder they lose track of things. Everything moves so slow.

Dignity and respect - when Dad buzzed for a nurse the bank nurse came in and said "what do you want?". When Dad asked the catering staff what's on the menu, she said "it's coming"! This is meant to be a developed country.

Involvement in decisions - we have no idea what's going on, the doctors don't know what's wrong with him, he has been here for a week, so it's impossible to have any say. We keep asking for medication, but by the time the doctor comes round (once a day) to prescribe anything, it will take about 2-3 days to arrive. The condition in question becomes worse by then. The only way to get things you want is to keep bugging the nurses, which I'm sure they don't appreciate.

Same sex accommodation - this is not important to us.

My Dad is still at this hospital for over week now and undergoing tests all over again. A doctor pops in to see him for about 10 mins once a day. His condition has deteriorated since he first came to this hospital. I'll ask to send him to another hospital next time. Princess Alexandra and King George hospitals have been very good in the past. Some of the 5 star reviews on here are dubious and should be reviewed in themselves.
