"The staff at the maternity unit ..."

About: North Devon District Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

The staff at the maternity unit are very friendly and helpful, they can't do enough for you. However, I was shocked and disappointed to hear that there are no facilities for the care of prem babies born before 30 weeks and that mums and babies have to travel to the nearest available maternity hospital where a bed is available this could be Bristol, Plymouth or Exeter.

At a time when both mum and baby are vulnerable and need their family around them for support they are placed in a situation where they quite probabaly are unable to get either due to the travelling constraints placed on some families.

What could be improved

A prem unit for these babies is needed, it is unacceptable that as a community we should be made to suffer the trauma of having to be ferried around the country to get the care that is needed. This goes for all care no matter what the situation.
