"Nurses not cleaning patients"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske)

Anything else?

As a support worker (not carer) assisting an elderly patient at Treliske, I was appalled by the reluctance if not downright refusal of nurses to involve themselves in cleaning patients who are unable to toilet themselves. The client I assist has been left to sit in his own infected excrement for four hours + on a daily basis by nurses refusing to clean him and who are more than happy to wait four hours for an NHS health worker to arrive to do this. It is undignified and not in the patients best interests to be left in this state by nurses (sitting at nurse station with doors closed to ward) who say they are too busy to undertake this job. The support workers and the clients family are encouraged by the same nurses to clean up excrement infected with Noro virus, minus uniforms and minus proper training. It is an absolute disgrace in good nursing practice and worse it is a clear cut example of the lack of empathy that exists in todays NHS. Shame on Treliske. I shall be sending a copy of my complaint to my MP.

We are concerned to read your account of recent care at our hospital and would like the opportunity to respond to you directly. Please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison team on 01872 252793 or email them at pals.service@rcht.cornwall.nhs.uk We do take any concerns about standards of care very seriously and would encourage patients, relatives or carers to let us know at the time so we can deal with them on the spot.
