"Abandoned and ignored in A&E"

About: Luton & Dunstable Hospital

Anything else?

brought in with extremely low BP and severe dehydration after collapsing at work, and as a known diabetic. Once the paramedics left I was put in a chair and left in the corridor. Seen by triage nurse more than half an hour later but left on my own in the room without a call button where I passed out again. She didnt take any details, examine me or ask me what was wrong. Instead had a conversation about a colleague with another nurse during the short time she was with me in the room. I was on my own for the first hour and a half until a relative arrived and felt very vulnerable. BP and Blood sugars not taken throughout my four hour stay. BP taken as I left but not noted - we noted it was still low at 117/50. Even though I was semi concious and very lethargic, after 'triage', I was put in a cubicle and told to get undressed and get on the bed and then left. I could not do this by myself as I was so weak. When cannula was inserted for blood tests, the doctor used the wrong size needle (too big) which caused excruciating pain the whole time it was in. I was eventually given a bag of fluid three quarters of an hour before I was discharged and this was squeezed through so they could get rid of me quickly. I had to be carried out and remained ill, tired, disoriented. The sister was extremely rude and disinterested. The ambulance service and paramedic who attended first were excellent but sadly let down by their disinterested, unprofessional colleagues who obviously didn't bother to read the notes that were brought in. My BP was 77/40 and none of the staff even bothered to check if it had improved - atrocious. Discharge diagnosis (without any paperwork) - probably Gastro Enteritis and dehydration. That was three days ago and I am still suffering with the same symptoms but will take my chances with the GP after the bank holiday. I have made many trips to the L&D, some have been excellent, some mediocre and some downright awful. But this one was scary because they were clearly out of touch, I felt vulnerable but as I was so ill, was unable to speak up for myself. Thank God my husband was there when they tried to give me drugs that I am allergic to and he stopped them. He managed to stop me rolling off the 'bed' a number of times and also from pulling out my cannula because the surly Sister had left it caught on the undercarriage of the bed.
