"palliative care"

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital

Anything else?

My brother was nursed at RBH over the new year, at end Stage of life, he did make it home with good support for the last 3 weeks of his life. The care he received was on the whole good, but one or two staff let him down, I am an ex nurse myself and I am maybe more "picky" than most. Depending on the staffing we knew if he was going to be well looked after, or left alone. The palliative care team, social worked and OT were very helpful, bit the nursing staff weren't always. There were sometimes huge barriers because the nurses often had very poor English language.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are pleased that you found the palliative care team helpful and that your brother managed to spend his last few weeks at home. However, we are sorry that you had less consistent experiences of the nursing staff on the ward. Usually our ward team is rated very highly, and as you observed, there are some excellent nurses within the team. Over the last couple of months, vacancies have necessitated increased use of temporary staff, some of whom are less familiar with the ward routines and the expectations placed upon them. We hope to be fully established with our own staff in the near future. We are very sorry for any anxiety the lack of consistency has caused both yourself and your family.
