"New knee to go"

About: Hexham General Hospital

Anything else?

I was admitted to ward 3 of Hexham General Hospital for a total knee replacement on the 19th of March.

To say I was terrified would be an understatement, in the past my experience of hospitals, including Hexham, have been poor.

This was quite, quite different, from the initial phone call to see if there was a bed available I was spoken to as an adult with courtesy and good humour.

The ward is cheerful and bright the staff who seem to work long, long shifts yet are tireless and will take time to make sure you understand exactly what is going on with your treatment.

When I suffered sickness from one lot of medication the proposed changes and options were discussed with me so I knew what would be happening. Buzzers were answered quickly.

Food was excellent and I'm a really fussy eater although I don't know why there had to be so much off it, does anyone really need three or four courses three times a day?

The nursing staff worked as a solid team, doctors were approachable.

The only person I had any problems with was a senior Physiotherapist who took exception when I asked that someone would ensure I got a follow up appointment for physiotherapy because I hadn't been sent an appointment to attend the pre-op class, and to date I heven't had any information about the physio class I'm to attend.

All in all it's a 10/10 from me, well done everyone and thankyou.

Dear Joan

Firstly can I say that I hope you are recovering well at home, that the pain is manageable and that you are receiving excellent follow up care.

Thank you so much for your kind comments about the service you received at Hexham General Hospital and for the time you took to notice the contribution of all members of the team who played their part in enabling you to feel confident that you were being cared for in the right way. The kind, consistent, high quality care you describe is exactly what we want for all of our patients. Your recommendation of our service means a lot to us.

I am particularly delighted that the respectful attitudes of the nursing and orthopaedics team and the dignity you were shown had such an impact. Your thoughtful feedback will be passed on to all those involved with your care.

I am very sorry, however, that you found the attitude of the physiotherapist lacking. We would like to learn more in order to rectify this with you. If you would like to discuss this with us further, you can call our head of physiotherapy, Karen Renforth, who will be very pleased to speak to you. Karen can be contacted on 077478 92607.

With best wishes for a swift and successful recovery,

Annie.

Annie Laverty
