My comment stems from telephone contact with the hospital today. My sister was admitted to Monkswell Ward last evening for scheduled surgery today (hysterectomy) following the recent discovery of Uterine cancer. Her husband telephone just after lunch for a progress update but was only told she was sleeping and that 'medical information cannot be told over the phone. He would have to visit. I telephone myself and was told the same thing. Whilst I appreciate the need for patient confidentiality, rather than a bland statement such as this, a 'the operation went as well as could be expected' might have avoided unnecessary anxiety as to the actual outcome - it's all too easy under these circumstances to fear the worst. I wish hospital staff would put themselves in the position of a relative sometimes. It matters greatly. We are all now waiting on his visit, which incidentally was not scheduled in view of the fact it's likely my sister will indeed continue to 'be sleeping' until the effects of her g/a have worn off. They live some 40 mins away from the hospital and my brother in law is not in good health himself. Thank you.
