"I attended an out-patient ENT ..."

About: Salisbury District Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

I attended an out-patient ENT clinic. The hospital was reached easily by the local bus service. The out-patient department was signposted clearly and was clean and quiet. I was seen 15 minutes after my appointment time. The nursing staff were very pleasant and helpful. The consultant was equally pleasant, informal and explained everything I needed to know. I came away feeling hopeful about my (minor) condition and will have no anxiety about returning.

What could be improved

The presence of patients smoking outside the main entrance - one with an IVI bottle attached - seemed somewhat alarming. The day was warm and sunny but what happens in winter?

Thank you for your comments about your recent experience as a patient at our hospital. We are pleased that you felt that you were treated well.

As a healthcare organisation, we try to discourage smoking and run campaigns and events to help us do this. For people who feel the need to smoke, we have a small number of designated "smoking shelters" around the hospital site. Patients, staff and visitors are requested to smoke only in these areas. There is a smoking shelter a short walk from the Main Entrance, and members of staff are encouraged to direct people who are smoking to the shelters so that people entering the hospital do not have to walk through smoke before they reach the doorways.
