My partner had been unwell but was becoming disorientated.
We called an ambulance and were taken to Lewisham A & E, where they quickly diagnosed chest infection, kidney failure and serious blood poisoning. They then did a scan and said an emergency operation was needed due to an internal perforation/tear - and she was seriously unwell and could die.
The operation was a success but she remained seriously unwell and in Intensive Care for some weeks - gradually leaving hospital after 2 months.
This was obviously extremely stressful but throughout the staff skill and care was superb. The paramedics and A &E staff were calming and professional, the surgical team explained clearly what they were doing. The ICU and HDU nurses were approachable, open to questions and reassuring at a trying time. Their calm approach made the experience more bearable.
