Smoking near hospital entrances

"Smoking near hospital entrances"

(as a service user),

Disgusted that people continue to smoke near entrances/exits at hospital.

Cigarette butts littering ground at doors. Have to hold my breath every time. Yuch! Not very good for health promotion.

I have now had responses to your helpful feedback from colleagues in our Directorate of Information and Clinical Support Services and Directorate of Public Health.

We have taken steps to ensure that cigarette bins / containers are regularly emptied and similarly, will be regularly cleaning out areas of shrubbery and other garden areas, where cigarette ends are thrown by smokers.

We are looking at the possibilities of upgrading the front door entrances at University Hospital Ayr and University Hospital Crosshouse. This will include looking at the option of relocating the smoking shelters. All of this work will support the move to all NHS Scotland premises being smoke free by March 2015.

I am delighted to be able to post an further update on your original posting from 10 months ago.

Update from Elaine Young, Senior Manager, Public Health Department, NHS Ayrshire and Arran (NHSAA):

During November and December 2013 we undertook an extensive engagement exercise with staff and the public on how we move to smoke free grounds within NHS Ayrshire & Arran – not “if” we move to SFG (as this is a Scottish Government directive), but “how” we might implement this action locally.

This engagement exercise involved engagement booklets, press releases, use of social media, staff surveys, attending staff meetings and forums and we received approx 1000 views. This information has now been themed and will be considered by NHSAA’s Corporate Management Team in February 2014. Following on from this the smoke-free grounds policy and implementation plan will be developed with a view to NHSAA having smoke-free grounds by March 2015.
