"why can "simple" ops not be done quicker?"

About: Tamar Referral & Appointments Centre

(as the patient),

I was referred for a hernia operation which I was told was no more serious than having a tooth out - local anaesthetic. So, why did I have to chase up my date of the operation many weeks after the referral? I saw TRAC about June/July and eventually the operation was fixed for November. By that time I had contracted DVT so had to be on Hefarin/warfarin so I could not have the operation - fair enough. What annoys me is that if the op was “simple” why was it not done within a couple of weeks in June/July? You have a waiting list of 18 weeks and seemed determined to stick to this rather that squeeze in simple operations. Now the whole process has started again - I have to go for an examination next week then no doubt I will have to wait 18 weeks. In France the wait would have been around two days. The staff, nurses and doctors are very nice and helpful but there is too much bureaucracy.

Dear ‘Paris525’,

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience of using the TRAC service and I apologise that you had to chase your referral for your hernia procedure.

The TRAC team is here to offer patients a choice of time and place for their treatment, wherever possible, and to provide information that patients may require before they make their choice. Your chosen provider will then organise any procedures and dates for operations, all providers manage their own patient lists and support the 18 week referral to treatment process. Unfortunately I am not able to answer the queries you have raised but I would be more than happy to share them with the hospital department who may wish to provide some more information here.

If you would like to contact me I am available on 01626 883712 from Monday to Friday from 9am until 5pm. Alternatively you can also email me at cab.helpdesk@nhs.net.

Kind regards

Gemma Tremlett
