About: Royal Sussex County Hospital

Anything else?

am waiting to have Open Heart Surgery at RSCH, I was called in on Weds, 6th of March, & arrived at 7-40am for my 8am appointment. I was told I was 2nd on the list, & that my operation was scheduled for 12 Midday. I filled in all my consent forms, then waited for a bed. I ended up on Level 10 in a Womens Ward! I was told to shave my hairs off with a special shaver, and sent to have a shower with special anti-bacterial liquid. The Nurse warned me to make sure the shower doors were properly closed so that water wouldn't escape on to the floor. I turned the shower on, but quickly realised that all the water was overflowing, as the drain just could not cope with the water flow. So I had to mop all the flooding up off the floor, whilst doing this I discovered very badly soiled (with poo), garments under a pile of towels on the floor, not very pleasant!

Anyway after this horrible experiance I rang the buzzer, as I was told to do so by the Nurse, as she told me she would come & help me to tie the gown up at the back. However, after 5 mins of buzzing nobody came, so I had to make do as best I could.

After returning to my bed, a young lady came to see me & explained she was the Physio, and she would be helping me to recover with exercises after my Op.

So I sat and waited........12pm came, then 1pm, then 2pm, then 3pm, still no word from anybody, so I was so fed up I got dressed and went down to the Cardiac Dept. to ask what was happening, and was told that my operation had to be postponed due to too many emergency admissions. On enquiring why I had been left on my own without being informed what was happening, they agreed that it wasn't good enough and apologised. I was very upset by now and very stressed out, as you can imagine.

I was told before I went into this Unit that is was a Centre of Excellence, I am beginning to have my doubts now!

The following day a lady rang and said there were very few slots in March for my operation, so I wasn't even offered a date to come in! Needless to say, I will be looking for another hospital from now on!

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your experience at our hospital. I was very sorry to learn of your postponed operation and can well understand your frustration and disappointment. Last week was one of the most challenging there has been for the Trust for many years - so much so that we took the rare decision to cancel a considerable number of electic operations in order that we could care for the unprecednted number of emergency patients coming through our doors. That said there is no excuse for the lack of communication to you about your surgery. I am profoundly sorry for this. If you would like a formal investigation of your concerns please contact us by emailing complaints@bsuh.nhs.uk or by telephone 01273 664511
