"A day out in the Heart Unit"

About: Cumberland Infirmary

Anything else?

I recently went into the Heart Unit for an agniogram and I don't think any other hospital, state or private, could better the service I received. It might be a portacabin, but it was light, bright and most importantly spotlessly clean and comfortable. Everyone on the unit from cleaner to consultatnn were true professionals, making a slightly daunting experience almost enjoyable.

I was mainly looked after by a Sister and Nurse , both happy to give me enough time to have all my queries answered, despite the fact they were very busy with the morning patients. When the porcedure was delayed due to an emergencey the Sister kept me constantly informed.

The procedure itself is not that pleasant but the doctor's team managed to create a calm, warm atmosphere, which certainly helped me relax. I was kept fully informed about what was about to be done, so there were no nasty surprises.

After the procedure the Sister came into her own, checking on my progress and calling for the consultant at one point when she wasn't totally happy. I felt completely confident in the care I received, nothing was too much trouble. As the day wore on I confided in the Sister that I was keen to change some of my medication and she doggedly set about ensuring that this was done, even getting a second registrar to talk to me. She was determined that I was going to leave a satisfied customer, and I did.

The Sister finally went off duty 45 minutes late and the redoubtedable night team came on, they were also lovely and closely monitored my progress, at no time did I feel neglected or unimportant. I even got toast and a millky drink before being collected by my husband, quite a treat after a ong day.

I confess previous experiences in the Cumberland have not been quite so positive, but I defy anyone to criticise this unit (and the excellent Nurse who got me referred there). It does show that when you have a team of dedicated professionals, who treat their patients as individuals, they can produce a service which is second to none.

If you are going into the Heart Unit I can only say don't worry, you will be cared for extremely well.

Many thanks to all at the Unit.

Thank you for your kind words about the care delivered by the staff in our Heart Centre. You will be pleased to learn that following a successful first year, our Heart Centre is to provide 24/7 care from April so that it can deal with both planned and emergency care around-the-clock. This is preventing many patients in north Cumbria from having to travel eslewhere.
