"Upset by care for possible ectopic pregnancy"

About: Broomfield Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

Was referred by my GP to the EPU due concern about ectopic pregnancy.

When I arrived I was told by the nurse "My GP should not have referred me", "No scanning Facilities available", "no beds available if I need to say in". Finally got booked in at 2pm after at least 3 hours of waiting, saw a doctor, had blood test done, doctor advised me it would take 1 1/2 hours for results to come back.

1 1/2 passed - no result back, nurse advised me it would be at least another 40 minutes.

By 8pm I then saw second doctor. She scan me, said worried about possible pregnancy outside the womb. She said "I will be back in a few minutes I will chase your blood test results up." I waited 20 minutes in the room waiting for doctor to come back and she never did come back.

I went to find the nurse, she said your results are still not back take a seat in the waiting room. I had no idea about my scan results I was just left in the room on my own worried with no idea about results and apart from being told by doctor "possible pregnancy outside womb".

By 9:30 nurse said doctor was coming to review me. No doctor, saw nurse who discharged me from notes that doctor left everything was fine and blood test was fine. Was told to take painkillers, do another pregnancy test in weeks time and contact us with result if any problems to call the unit. Finally went home at 10pm.

Two days later I was in a lot of pain, contacted the EPU, was told "no record of me" so got passed to the ward "no record of me again" until the nurse who discharged me remembered me.

The nurse who dealt with my call said "What's the problem?" I explained then nurse told me "I should not have rung as results were fine" "Not a gynae problem", "Take painkillers if pain persist to take myself to A&E" "to ring doctors with regard to any problems".

So I asked if I was still to contact them with regard to pregnancy test result in 5 days time. Was told "No, to contact GP with result". Got the impression that I was nothing but a bother and taking up their time, even through myself and husband was told to contact the unit if any problems and result from pregnancy test. 5 days later I did another test which still came back faint positive so I contacted my doctor straight away.

Saw my doctor following day, explained what happened, she looked on screen no discharge letter from hospital, so my doctor had to chase it up. Doctor said I was pregnant, pain had decreased and was feeling better doctor was happy. She contacted the hospital for discharge letter to find out about scan results etc. By the afternoon my doctor contacted me and asked me to come back in so I did.

She explained to my about my results "I have Endometriosis" and I will need an "Laparoscopic operation". The diagnosis was confirmed in early March and I have now be referred to gynae doctor and I requested Springfield hospital. I received my appointment for Springfield yesterday.

Very very unhappy with the lack of care and response with regards to the doctors on the EPU and nurse's response when I needed care and help.

Due to this I have no trust or faith in the care of Broomfield hospital and the doctors and wish not to attend Broomfield hospital again. Far too many bad experiences at this hospital.

Thanks to my doctor I have finally got to the root of my problem, if it wasn't for my doctor taking the time to look through my results the same day she received the results, I wouldn't have known and would never have been referred or treated as it seems that Broomfield have no time and care for patients these days.

My family and I are very upset and disgusted with the service due to the lack of care and attention I received from them and the fact that I was told my scan results were fine when clearly they were not.

Waiting time was beyond a joke from 2pm - 10pm all that was done was a blood test and scan and saw 2 doctors who both said different thing. I was left with not knowing what was wrong, bottom line a waste of time and very worried and frightening time for me and family also that I came out the hospital same way I went in not knowing anything.

In Feb 2012 I attended an outpatient appointment to see gynae doctor, waited 3 hours before I was seen. When I did see them I was not impressed at all nor my husband. The doctor was very rude and abrupt asked what the problem was. They did not even give me a chance to explain and did not want to see the diary I had been keeping of the problem with my periods etc. They said "I need to exam you". I said that I do not wish to be pulled around due to pain with that the doctor said "well I can't help you or treat you". So I agreed, they scanned me and found I had 8 cysts on my left ovary and 9 on the other, and said "I had polycystic ovary syndrome" told me to have the merina coil fitted I said "no due to having it before and had to have it removed due to problems".

Doctor said "well I can't help you anymore" so I left the hospital upset, angry, very unhappy and due to the way I was spoke to and treated, later found out that I didn't have polycystic ovary syndrome.

I am just thankful for my doctor that she has quickly put everything into place for me and treats me like a patient, takes the time to understand, explains treatment results etc.

I am thankful that I have been able to choose which hospital I want.

Broomfield is not one I will be choosing for outpatient appointment etc.
