"Planned Knee Replacement"

About: Pinderfields General Hospital

Anything else?

Overall the care of my mother throughout her stay on the ward was brilliant, bar one or two things. The Majority of the staff and doctors on the ward are a credit to the profession. They showed the utmost respect to my mother and all family that visited her. The Nurses on the ward were very relaxed with visiting times, they took into consideration that my mother was in a private room and that she had two young children. Their understanding and their consideration allowed me and my sister to spend the majority of our day on the ward. The nurses were friendly and would often improve the atmosphere with friendly jokes to the kids.

The only negatives to my mothers experience, was the attitude of two of the nurses. These two nurses let the team down. My mum asked the first nurse to change her near to burst catheter bag. To which the nurse replied, its fine the night shift will do it. This is unbelievable, this nurse expects my mum not to go to the toilet until the night staff come on. This nurse was asked to change it at 3:45 pm, so she wants my mum to wait till 8pm! I was unsatisfied with this, so about an hour or so later I went to the nurses desk and pleaded to her just to change it. She finally did change it, but me asking for such a simple thing to get done, resulted in the nurse bearing a grudge. About 20 mins later, another nurse came to my mums room and told me to leave the ward as it was dinner time. This was on the fourth day, my father had cleared it with the ward manager. When I told the nurse about this, she wasn't too happy. Then when I said I'm hear to help feed my mum, she said no. To which i referred her to the trust website, which says a patients family is allowed to stay when helping with serving food. The fact that my mother didn't eat ward food due to the fact the food was all meat/egg, to which she is vegan. So home cooked food was being brought in. When I told the nurse, my mum has home cooked food brought in she said 'isn't our food not good enough for you lot". After this rant, she told me I could go sit in the waiting room, and wait till dinners over. So I said okay, and I'd just grab my things, by that time my mum needed something out of her suitcase, I was literally a min or so and the nurse came back and send Thats it leave the ward. She was so rude. So me as a minor, was forced to stand alone outside the ward. This was such a let down, the rest of the staff were so caring and so understanding. I believe that undercover inspections on nurses, need to be done so that none else receives the prejudice and unfair treatment what we did.

Apart from these two nurses, the rest of the staff were 5*, especially the ward managers, they are such a credit to the hospital and proffesion.
