I found the whole process very streamlined. I was asked to arrive at 7. 30 am (Chanctonbury Ward) and I had a fairly long wait (my operation was at noon) but this was because I was last on the surgery list for the morning, so to be expected.
Throughout the wait the nursing staff did their best to keep us informed and it wasn't too bad.
Prior to my operation I was seen by an anaesthetist, surgeon and a nurse for assessment - all took time to tell me what to expect, ask questions and gave me the time to ask questions.
I also had to have an enema. The nurse was kind and gentle and took extra time to make sure that I had a bell and I knew should would be close by at all times whilst I waited for it to work.
When it came time to go down, the nurse stayed with my while I waited for the surgical nurse as she knew I was nervous (about which she was very reassuring). I was then taken down to the theatre. Everyone took time to chat and reassure me - and the anaesthetists and other theatre staff were chatty and kind.
On waking, the nurse asked how I felt and brought me tea. From the time I awoke to the time I left I was looked after incredibly well (I quite literally have never been offered so much tea! ).
Aside from the fact that the whole process was smooth and well organised, what made the difference was that I felt that every single person I dealt with cared about how I felt and was doing their best to make the experience better.
Lovely people doing a superb job.
