"My son's blood test "

About: North Middlesex Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

My son attended North Middlesex hospital for a blood test. My husband drove my son and waited with him My sons number came up and he went into the relevant cubicle. 30 seconds later the phlebotomist came out asked my husband if he was my sons father and then asked him to come into the cubicle. She stood looking totally embarrassed muttering 'ummm ummm'. Eventually my husband said there is not a problem and left the cubicle.

My son gave his date of birth had his blood test and left. So what seemed to be the problem? Could it be my son has Down's syndrome and this woman had decided he was going to be a problem? I sent a complaint to North Middlesex Hospital and received an explanation that really insults my intelligence. My son is 30 years of age has greying hair and usually a 5 o clock shadow He is also 5ft 6in tall and weighs around 13stone.

The phlebotomists excuse for calling my husband in and causing embarrassment was she thought my son was an unaccompanied child. If this woman's eyesight is so bad should she be taking blood? It was explained to me that she didn't look at his date of birth. Is that not part of the procedure that the patient is asked their date of birth and it is checked against the form? I did receive an apology but this ridiculous excuse for what seemed to be prejudicial behaviour beggars belief. If the apology was sent without this insult and I was told they would try harder to treat all patients equally, I might not have taken this further but now I most certainly will
