"Lack of Information"

About: Royal Hallamshire Hospital (Assisted Conception Unit)

(as the patient),

Having assisted conception I have repeatedly asked for the efficacy of the treatments we have been given (as I'm a medical statistician). I don't expect an answer immediately, but repeatedly I've been given "Well it varies" or what seemed to be numbers off the cuff, and basically a reluctance to tell us how likely pregnancy is to result from each of the treatments.

If it were an elective surgical procedure that we were seeking treatment for we would be told up front the risks associated with the procedure, but that doesn't seem to be the case in these circumstances.

I therefore resorted to searching the medical literature myself and found that either the numbers I was told were plain wrong, or that some of the treatments were no more effective than having sex (which brings into question why the care trusts are choosing to offer them as treatments in the first place).
