My outpatient appointment was cancelled with 1 hour notice (the consultant was unavailable).
Frustrating, but they did call me both at home and on my mobile phone. The lady informing me was extremely pleasant: which must be difficult to do when you are about to upset a clinic's worth of patients.

We are very sorry about the short notice as the consultant was unavailable. As you point out, we do try very hard to contact patients to avoid a wasted journey into the hospital.
