"Horrible night-time stay in ward D58"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Urology

(as the patient),

I was admitted to D58 with a serious kidney infection where i was placed on a bed next to a Gentleman who was very ill and was coughing and spluttering all night which i know he could not help and several others with breathing problems. I found the staff very unhelpful as i was administered a drip which needed to be changed in 8 hrs time at 4 pm my drip was empty but was still in my arm.

I informed a member of staff later that evening that i was having trouble resting due to the noise of the patient next to me gurgling and bring up phlegm which is not a nice sound at the best of times and was making me feel rather unwell. The nurse suggested i should try cotton wool in my ears ! I never saw the cotton wool.

While observing the staff members on hygiene i witnessed a member of staff pouring bodily fluids down the hand washing sink and putting the plastic cup it came from inside someones tea cup. Urine bottles where placed onto a patients tray/table that you use to eat from. The cleaning ladies used the same bucket of water and j cloth to clean the whole of the ward e.g window sills, tables, etc.

Not once did i observe hand washing of any member of staff.

All in all my stay was horrible. I discharged myself when i probably still needed to be there.

I am not a chap to moan and can handle anything thrown at me, but i will never return to the QMC again if i can help it!
