About: Buckland Hospital / Ear, Nose and Throat

(as a relative),

visiting buckland hospital this afternoon, 26/02/2013, I found a NHS white van parked in a disabled bay directly outside the main hospital doors. The only card in window said it was collecting bloods?

As a blue badge holder I had to park across the street. We expect the bays to be on a first come first parked basis but staff should really know better than to abuse the use of bays, I believe there are only 2 available.

To add insult to injury the driver was sitting inside the main entrance drinking tea /coffee with 2 female employees. When I remarked how bad it was that a hospital van was in the bay he never said a word, but after a couple of minutes walked out and got in the van. The ladies sharing the table said it is something the drivers always do, even though they have been told it is wrong. Wrong? I think it is a disgusting abuse of the blue badge scheme and they should be penalised

Response from Julie Pearce, Chief Nurse + Director of Quality + Operations, East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust We are preparing to make a change

Thank you for taking the time to raise your concern and I am sorry that you were not able to use the disabled parking space.

I will raise with our drivers to ensure that they are aware of the impact of not being considerate about where they park. Our values are about 'putting patients first' and on this occasion we failed to do so. Please accept my apology.

Update posted by locallass (a relative)

Thank you for taking the time to not only read, but to take seriously, my concerns.

At the end of the day there is always somebody who is more ill than yourself, and the thought of somebody older possibly struggling with not only their own mobility but possibly trying to get a spouse in a wheelchair into the hospital while an employee is sitting drinking coffee is not acceptable.

Once again thank you.
