"Ward changes during the night"

About: East Surrey Hospital / General medicine Surrey PCT / District nursing

(as the patient),

I was in East Surrey Hospital January 2013 for a kidney infection. I was very weak and unwell.

One night I was told at 9pm that I would be moving wards, and that I had 30 minutes to pack all of my things. I was very shocked when I was told but I did as asked.

I sat waiting and about 10pm I asked what was happening and was told the porter was on his way, but they were looking for the keys to the unlock the ward. The strange thing was the bed next to me was empty!

I asked about the medication I should have taken and was told I could not have it because one of them them would make me sleep. Also I could not get into bed because it was needed for a new patient. I sad cold, tired, vulnerable and very poorly.

I sat waiting until 11:15pm in the chair next to my bed when a nurse came and told me I wouldn't be moving after all and I could get into bed. I was distraught by this stage, and shocked that this had happened especially at night. The other issue I had that I was never referred to by my name just the ward and bed number.

Dear Clio

I am very sorry to hear about your poor experience. If you feel up to it could you forward your details to me and I can investigate?

I can be contacted at susan.aitkenhead@sash.nhs.uk

Again, apologies for the experience that you report; when things don't go as well as they should, we need to investigate and find out why, to ensure this doesn't happen again.

I very much look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Susan Aitkenhead

Chief Nurse
