Arrived with my seriously ill mother after midnight, ward staff were ready and waiting and vigorously set about addressing her pain and launching investigations.

When it later became apparent that the situation was very grave, we were treated with respect and frankness by all of the ward staff. This included being fully included in the DNR decision, led by a consultant who made a special trip from Bishop Auckland to see us immediately.

When we wanted to take our mother home, the ward staff and Macmillan specialist nurses moved mountains to get everything ready.

My view is that Ward 31 represents everything that is good about the NHS, and I have no time for the local media.
