"Follow up after breast cancer treatment"

About: Royal Bolton Hospital / Breast surgery

(as the patient),

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in Oct 2007 and had surgery (twice) in Nov 2007 at The Royal Bolton. This was followed in Feb this year by 3 weeks (15 days) of radiotherapy. I was given to understand that I would need to return to the breast clinic every 3 months for the 1st year. What I want to know is, when will I receive my first appointment? Should it be 3 months after the surgery? 3 months after radiotherapy finished? 3 months from when I saw the oncologist (April 2)? When?

In some way, I feel 'abandoned'! Not in a "Oh woe is me" way but just because I haven't a clue what happens next. While I am not making an official complaint here, I have to say that the breast care nurse assigned to 'my team' didn't inspire me with much confidence that I could ring her and talk about my concerns. Hence here I am, in 'limbo', because I'm not at all sure what happens from here. Could someone get back to me please?

We're very sorry that you feel you have not had adequate communication at what must be an already worrying time for you. We're particularly concerned that you do not feel confident in contacting the nurse you saw. We can't give you a definitive answer to your queries via this forum as the answer may be different for each individual. Therefore please either contact the nurse you saw originally or, if you still don't feel confident about that, please contact the breast unit departmental manager who will do her best to resolve your concerns.
