"Bed managers - anything but!"

About: Royal United Hospital

Anything else?

Waited 5 hours for a bed for a pre-booked operation. Finally given a bed which I had seen become vacant over an hour earlier; within 5 minutes told my operation was cancelled as they had run out of theatre time. Nurses were lovely; so-called bed managers clearly did not care. Did not bother come to see me although I was promised they would.

We are very sorry to hear about your experience. The bed managers work with the clinical teams to identify appropriate beds for patients admitted to the hospital either as an emergency or booked admission. Over recent weeks the Trust has experienced high levels of emergency cases which has caused cancellations of booked admissions. The senior managers within Surgery work closely each day with bed managers to ensure theatres are able to start and prioritise patients based on their clinical need. Part of the senior manager role is to ensure that patients waiting are kept informed of any delays or likely cancellations. We apologise that this was not your experience.
