I was admitted to A&E with severe abdominal pain although this had reduced quite a bit once the ambulance crew had given me some entonox at home. Generally my hospital experience was ok but I nearly got sent home from A&E without the doctor checking my blood results. It was only when I asked that it was checked and then the decision that I should stay in was made as my CRP was high! (I only asked as curious to know what was wrong as not really given any adequate explanation).
It turned out I had a serious infection that required surgery in the end and not very responsive to intravenous antibiotics, as my CRP kept increasing upwards so I was told.
I also feel my discharge could have been managed better. Sent home with antibiotics but no painkillers (which I had difficulty getting myself due to being very tender, therefore had to rely on an elderly relative).
I was also sent home with no verbal or written post op discharge advice (so called ambulance crew out again first night as as bad abdominal pain again but this time from air injected during operation but I was not made aware of what to expect and also a bleed.
I phoned the ward a few times before getting a reasonable answer other than just coming back into A&E.
Last of all there was to be no follow up to check my condition!
Fortunately I was already under care under of a doctor somewhere else, as I had missed their appointment due to this episode, and told I definitely needed to be monitored in future due to the condition I have and what they had seen in surgery.
I also need to check discharge letter as the information conflicts with a previous scan I had done. Therefore I will follow this up with my medical records and look further into this to ensure I am fully informed of correct information about my body.
