Our mother, was 83 years old and had suffered with emphysema over many years leading to her needing nursing home care. Over the past few years she had been hospitalised many times at Barnsley and had had pnuemonia about 5 times.
Last month she was admitted with pneumonia once more to the new Acute Medical Unit, this time however she did not respond to the treatment and developed sepsis and kidney failure.
Mam's mind remained sound and she requested that all treatment be stopped and as a family we supported that. She had had enough.
The Consultant eventually agreed and the nursing staff were absolutely marvellous in their treatment of mam and us through this emotional time.
We are a large family but none of us were ever turned away or made to feel we were a nuisance. The nursing care was marvellous, everything was fully explained and support was always there for us and mam.
We cannot praise the staff enough, especially Sister Sandra and Sister Sally.
