Patient has had her second operation appointment cancelled the second appointment was cancelled on the same day. The patient was called by the consultant’s secretary and was told that there were other emergencies today. I do not like attending the hospital and have to prepare myself mentally for this and I get worked up and I cannot understand why I am feeling unimportant by how I am being treated by the hospital passing me by, this has been a whole year out of my life, I just want to get back to normality. In December when my operation appointment was cancelled I asked if I could go to a different hospital in order to move forward and the consultant’s secretary told not to do this and made me an appointment for feb 2013 which was cancelled on the same day.

Firstly, may we apologise for the delay in responding to you especially after you had taken the trouble to let us know about your experience through the NHS Choices website. We have changed our system of how we respond so that we can ensure a much better response time in the future. In the meantime, thank you for letting us know your story and the difficulties you encountered with your cancelled operations. We agree, it is very frustrating when you have prepared for an operation to find that it has had to be cancelled and that this happened on two occasions. We have been addressing this over recent months and providing more beds at the Cumberland Infirmary so that we can try and limit the number of cancellations. Unfortunately, when we have a large number of emergency admissions we may have to cancel some operations but also aim to reschedule these as soon as possible. We are improving patient flow now with admissions and discharges from the hospital so we are hopeful this will lead to fewer cancelled operations. Thank you once again for letting us know and apologies for taking so long to reply.
