"Poor treatment - Subsequent severe infection"

About: Sandwell General Hospital

Anything else?

I attended Sandwell A&E following a dog bite to my hand.

Main Issues

-the standard of treatment I received whilst attending Sandwell Hospital Accident and Emergency

- the qualification and competence of the individual who treated myself

- the standard of cleanliness in the cubicle where I was treated; blood on the trolley this was conveyed to both staff involved in my treatment - this was not rectified

- the lack of action taken by Duty Manager in Accident and Emergency when I complained directly with them.

Following Treatment

Wound was not cleaned throughly at Sandwell A&E - with nurse at my local GP extracting further dog hair

Wound was infected that I had to attend another hospital and have my hand operated on.

I have lost all sensation in my ring finger and have since put in a formal complaint and I am now struggling with the lack of communication from this department.

I hope someone senior at the hospital reads this and makes contact with myself.

I am very sorry to hear of the concerns that you raise. I see that you have put in a formal complaint. If you want to email me your details on mikesharon@nhs.net I will be happy to check on the response. We are continually looking to see how we can improve care for all our patients including in A&E and I am sorry that on this occasion we seem not to have got it right.
