"Poor updating of information left my brother and I more distressed about our sister's death"

About: Barnsley Hospital

(as a relative),

I heard through a third party that my sister had died in BDGH. My brother and I tried to ring the hospital and eventually got through to admissions. After giving my sister's name, address and date of birth we were told that she wasn't deceased and was on one of the wards.

My brother went off to a social function the same evening believing my sister to be alive. At this function, over the speaker system it was announced that my sister had died. My brother was very upset and told everyone that his sister was alive and had been told this just an hour before. He received an apology.

While my brother was at the above social function I decided to ring a relative to check that my sister was on the ward they had said, and to find out what her situation was.

I found out that she had in fact died. Unfortunately I couldn't contact my brother so had to inform him via text.

It would be really good if BDGH could update information on their computer system within an adequate space of time. The information that she was on the ward, given to me by admissions, was in fact a good 24 hours out of date. She had died the day before.

Thank you for your posting and for bringing this breakdown in communication to our attention.

Firstly, I would like to express sincere condolences to you and apologise for the way in which you heard about your sister's death.

Your comments that our systems should be updated speedily are correct and your concerns will be raised with our staff.

Wherever possible we try to ask relatives to contact the ward where their relative is but I do appreciate that sometimes it can be difficult to get through to wards.

It would be helpful for us to talk to you to obtain more information so that we can fully investigate your concerns and our PALS Team can be contacted Monday - Friday 9.00 am - 5.00 pm on 01226 432430 or at barnsleypals@nhs.net.

Kind Regards.
