"Waiting at A&E"

About: Croydon University Hospital

Anything else?

I went to the A&E department on Wednesday 30.01.13 at 09:55 because my leg was swollen and painful following an angiogram. I was seen by a junior doctor at about 12:00 and had an ultra-sound examination at 16:00.

I did not mind the wait so much as the fact that I was made to sit outside in the corridor by the entrance on a cold metal bench from 16:15 until 19:30 before I was seen by a senior doctor. And that was after I went in to speak to the doctor; I do not believe that I would be seen this 'quickly' had I not done so.

A junior doctor admitted to me that it is unacceptable that a patient should be left in the corridor on a very cold and hard bench for more than 3 hours when I asked him to try sitting there for 3 hours; it is unacceptable for anyone but more so for someone who is unwell.

First of all, we are sorry for the delay in posting a reply – the team were trying to identify from your description which part of the urgent care/A&E area you were in that was so we could look at how to make it better. We think we have identified the seating, but would be grateful if you could contact our PALS team who would be happy to put you in touch with the service manager.

In general terms the seating in this area does have to be robust and durable as well as easy to clean for infection control reasons, but they should not be uncomfortable.

Please contact PALS on 020 8401 3210 or email talktous@croydonhealth.nhs.uk
