"Waiting times in A and E are atrocious"

About: Queen Alexandra Hospital

Anything else?

I am astounded at the ridiculously long wait to be treated in A and E. After just over an hour , I was triaged as high, given that I had a severe case of ecoli food poisioning and was almost passing out with the pain from the cramps. I had to wait, along with many seriously ill people in a very long queue, in the corridors. Occasionally, an ordelrly would take a few random vital signs checks on people who appeared unconsious. Nurses were gathering from time to time complaining bitterly about the lack of beds yet were not seeing to the patients in the queue. I can appreciate it is not their fault that the hospital is representative to one akin of the 19thC, but some consideration to the extreme discomfort that many of us clearly were experiencing , would have been nice

After waiting over 6 hours in the corridor to be seen, I asked my partner to take me home. It was quite clear, it would have been another couple of hours at least before I was seen. I know for a fact that this isnt an isolated incident. I was even told by my duty doctor to either go to Winchester or phone an ambulance as queuing times were notoriously bad at QA.

I was sorry to read your account of your attendance at the Emergency Department and please accept our apologies for your experience. We did see an increase in demand for our emergency services during the time you attended. This did have an impact on our ability to see patients in a more timely way. We are working very closely with other health care providers in the area to see what we can do to improve the situation.
