"Ignorance and incompetence"

About: outpatient dept.

(as the patient),

I had an experience in a hospital outpatient dept relating to an epileptic seizure. The staff were unprepared to deal with a full Tonic Clonic episode and did not follow basic first aid treatment i.e protect the person from danger, only move if in danger and allow to sleep it of, observing until fully recovered.

I was poked (witnessed) in the face until i came round, put in a wheelchair and left unsupervised while having partial seizures for a period of two and a half hours!

No care was given for bruised and swollen legs, no medication was organised to prevent cluster seizures and no observations and recordings of care given, timings of seizures or basics.

I was sent home because the staff said the dept was closing, and returned to the casualty for treatment later in the evening when seizures did not abait.

Staff were busy but, i believe the care i received was well below what anyone should expect. I should have been moved to casualty.

I was a staff member at the time! A qualified nurse who knows the level of the care and had written it down for my colleagues to use in just such an emergency.

Needless to say i have left this particular trusts employment.

The saving grace was that they issued four apologies, How would it have been for a normal patient!
