"Cancelled appointments"

About: Locala Community Partnerships CIC / Kirklees Sexual Health

(as a staff member),

My partner rang the clinic to arrange an appt, which took 1 week.

She received a call cancelling the appt due to the nurse being sick and arranged another appt, which was another week.

Attended the clinic on day of appt to be told the nurse was still sick and we should have had a "text message" informing us to call and rearrange. This was after leaving work early and making alternative child care arrangements. She then asked for a appt but was informed the nearest one would be another week.

The appt is to have her contraceptive chip removed so we could try to have a baby. After a few questions it was explained that the first appt is only to discuss the procedure and it will take roughly another week for an appt to actually remove the chip.

That's 5 weeks from start to finish with a lot of wasted time and effort in between on both sides.

Dear laddo054

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave your comments on Patient Opinion. I have discussed the issues you raise with various members of the Contraception and Sexual Health Team (CaSH).

Occasionally services do have to contact clients at the last minute to rearrange appointments when staff are off sick. However it does appear that you have been very unfortunate for this to happen twice. CaSH are looking into why your partner didn't receive a text message notification regarding your cancelled appointment but obviously this will be a general investigation rather than specific to your partner. Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience these cancelled appointments have caused.

When patients are contemplating an alternative method of contraception it is important for them to have a discussion with a nurse so that unwanted pregnancies can be avoided, the removal procedure can be explained and any changes in circumstances be assessed. However, in your case the reason for removal was so that you and your partner could start trying for a baby. So, we are now looking at incorporating these discussions into the removal appointment (rather than a separate appointment) if the reason for the removal is so that the client can start trying for a baby.

We take all comments seriously and hopefully other clients will benefit from a change in the system as a result of your posting.

Thank you

Gemma
