"Dissapointment and fast labour"

About: Kettering General Hospital

Anything else?

I gave birth to my daughter in August 2012. My experience was mixed, as it was my first child I didn't really know what to expect, so i put all my trust in the staff. They made me feel like I was making a fuss when I was actually experiencing very strong contractions which they appeared to miss even though I was being monitored. At no point did the staff check me, when I asked for pain relief I was given co codermol which did nothing I asked for something else and was told its too soon your not in labour, all decided just by looking at me. All the signs that I was in labour where there I asked if I could stand as I couldn't sit on the bed any longer as it was painful, I was told I had to as they wanted to monitor me, still the staff didn't check me, it wasn't until I was making such loud noises that a midwife came and asked what was wrong? I indicated downwards it was only then that the midwife checked me, having to remove my trousers herself and informed me I was 10 cm and ready to push! At this time I was still in a ward with 4 other women the staff then rushed me to a delivery room still with the clothes I came in on, which I then had to give birth in. I was very disappointed with my care leading up to the delivery however the midwife that delivered my daughter was brilliant and I couldn't fault her so that was a positive experience. I understand how busy the staff were and that my labour went from nothing to 10 cm very quickly but I was displaying all the normal signs which no one picked up on, very basic stuff, all they managed to do was make me feel like I was being a pain and i definatley wasnt being listened to. If I learnt anything it is to believe what you are feeling and make the staff listen if you feel they aren't.

I am so sorry to hear that your recent birth experience at Kettering was not as positive as you would have liked. At Kettering it is always our hope that women who choose to come and deliver their babies with us have a warm and positive experience which they can reflect upon happily. I am very sorry that you feel you were not listened to and that your pain was not adequately managed as staff strive to deliver a high level of care and support.

Can I take this opportunity to offer you an appointment to meet with me to review your birth notes and talk through your experience? We as a team are very willing to learn from feedback from those who have used our Service so that we can always learn and always improve.

You can reach me through Labour Ward to arrange a de-brief appointment if you feel it would be beneficial.
