"Cold and uncomfortable A&E waiting area"

About: Tameside General Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

I took my mum to A&E after she fell walking when she slipped on ice and hurt her wrist. All the staff we came into contact with were very friendly, kind and attentive. However we waited approx 2 hours, after which she was discharged with a sprained wrist.

Our waiting in the A&E was very uncomfortable, it was very cold, due to the double doors constantly opening and shutting. They lead directly into the waiting area and do not shield from the weather. I would suggest it was badly designed. Although I was not the patient, many people and children were and it was very unpleasant added to the fact that there was insufficient seating.

We were also disgusted at the high charge of car parking in the multi storey car park which cost £4. 30.

Response from John Goodenough, Director of Nursing, Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

I am pleased that you felt your experience was good at Tameside General Hospital. The National Standards for A&E waiting times is to be seen within 4 hours of attending.

This is the first time that the issue of the doors has been raised and I thank you for raising this and we will most certainly address this issue.

Our car parking charges are within the range of other organisations across Greater Manchester Trusts.

Again thank you for taking the time to comment on our services.

John Goodenough

Director of Nursing
