"Lack of Respect"

About: John Radcliffe Hospital

Anything else?

I was admitted following a four hour bout of gall bladder pain which left me in acute pain it was distressing for me and my husband and I, I was so doubled up I was bent over to try and reduce the pain. My scan months later proved I have numerous gall stones

I found the A&E staff brilliant until the following occurred:

1) The sister on duty was having a loud debate with the doctor outside of my cubicle about whether the doctor was permitted to carry out a heart test ( which was advised by the doctor but shot down because of budget costs by the nurse.

2) The following morning approx. 11am during the doctors round I heard the Consultant discussing my case, to at least 10 other doctors, in a very loud voice he communicated to them and anyone else who could hear what an odd woman I was! How rude

I had not punched anybody, been aggressive, or drunk!

It made me feel very vulnerable and distressed

I left the hospital soon after declaring never to go back to the JR

Patients should be treated with dignity and respect

Thank you for taking the time to recount your recent experience on NHS Choices. My name is Sue McNiven and I work for the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. I have responsibility for responding to comments about the John Radcliffe Hospital. The experience that you describe whilst in A&E is not typical and not acceptable and we are sorry that you felt distressed and vulnerable. We expect staff to be helpful and respectful of all patients and it is very important to us that we learn more about your recent experience and would invite you to contact me on telephone number 01295 229259. I will happily call you back. Alternatively, you can email me at sue.mcniven@ouh.nhs.uk. Please be assured that we value all feedback because as well as showcasing areas where we do well, it also points us to areas which may need addressing. In the meantime, we hope you are progressing well and look forward to hearing from you.
