"Long wait at Rotherham District General"

About: Rotherham Hospital

(as the patient),

Last month, I was admitted to Sitwell ward of the Rotherham District General hospital at 07:30 but was not taken for my operation until 13:45. This is not the first time this has happened - a previous occasion I was admitted at 07:30 and not seen until 15:30. Is it really necessary to have to wait for such a long time prior to the operation. Could the hospital not just stick to appointment times better?

Thank you for posting your comments and we are sorry that you had to wait a while before being taken to theatre.

The Trust quite often run all day theatre lists. The reason we ask patients to come in at 730am is so that both the anaesthetist and the surgeon get the opportunity to see each patient prior to them starting their session in theatre.

We sometimes have to change the order of the patients on a list on the day itself; some patients may be ill on the day of surgery, or some procedures may take longer than we envisaged. If all our patients are prepared and ready for theatre we are still able to run the session fully utilised.

We are sorry that you had to wait and would hope that the nurses keep all patients fully informed of where patients are on the list at all times. We will pass your comments on to the staff involved in your care and try to ensure that patients are communicated with better at all times.

Thank you again for raising this issue.
