"Condition treated but lacked personal care"

About: Lincoln County Hospital

Anything else?

I was admitted as an emergency and needed an operation.

I cannot fault the speed with which I was treated not the brilliant outcome of that operation.

What I found lacking was the personal care from staff. I am a fit and able person but due to my op could not move at all the night before nor the day after.

I was not offered assistance with a wash not even a bowl of water. I had to ask for both. Just pulling the table to me was difficult and again there was no offer to ensure I had everything I needed.

I was fine as I could ask and had plenty of visitors but there were those in the ward who could not.

Nurses, please understand that looking after the basic personal needs of a patient is your first priority, if these are not taken care of all the other wonders that are performed could well be useless if some one becomes dehydrated or develops pressure sores!!!

But on a positive the nurses were lovely in many ways and I do appreciate are busy. The actual problem I was admitted with was dealt with swiftly so many thanks for that.

Dear Gill, thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback; I am pleased that your condition was managed and treated well though saddened that you experienced some negative aspects in relation to nursing care.

You are right that the basics, the fundamentals of care are vitally important and this is what our nurses should all be striving for; I am sorry that we did not meet these standards for you all the time.

I have forwarded your posting to matrons and leaders at Lincoln as we use Patient Opinion stories for training and to feedback to our staff.

Thank you again.

Thank you for your feedback; comments both good and bad are really valuable to us in ensuring we understand patients experiences but also can learn from where we could have done better and build on what we did do well. I have fed your posting back to the staff; I am unsure which ward you were on but your comments are pertinent to all staff; I am sure the nurses concerned would be disappointed to know that you felt unsupported. Getting the basics right and meeting the fundamental needs of our patients is, as you say our priority and I am sorry we did not meet this for you on this occasion.
