"excellent care by nursing staff, but ambulance..."

About: King George Hospital

What I liked

I liked that my dad aged 92 was looked after very well, in resus, observation and fern ward, you hear that the elderly are not worth treating because they are old, but my dad was treated really well, and now after 4 weeks in hospital he is well enough to be discfharged.

What could be improved

The only thing that could be improved is that meal times should come with a hot drink the serving of, the tea and coffee's are far and few between,.oughtr my dad was often waiting for a hot drink throughout the day, in the end i would have to go to the restaurant to get him a cup o tea from there.

Anything else?

My dad has been waiting all day since this morning when the doctor said he can be discharged to go back to the care home where he lives, but no ambulance arrived to take him, it has now gone 5 pm so my dad wll be spending another night in fern ward. and hopefully tomorrow he will return to his care home.

Dear Anonymous,

Thank you for taking the time to share your family’s experience of King George Hospital, both the positive and the areas that the Trust can improve upon.

I do appreciate your kind comments about the staff that cared for your father. People are often quick to tell us when their care has not gone well and I am delighted to be able to pass onto our staff your kind comments of your experience.

I have also passed a copy of your comments to the Matron of Fern Ward about providing a hot drink with meals, so that she can explore in greater detail.

The Transport Manager has also been given a copy of your feedback about the delay in your father’s discharge as a result of no ambulance being available to take him home.

Should you wish to discuss this matter further please contact a member of the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) on 01708 435454 or email PALS@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk.

Yours sincerely,

Gary Etheridge

Deputy Director of Nursing
