What I liked
Relative was transferred to stroke unit, immediately following brain scan, however, this is where he was also treated for a hospital acquired pneumonia within less than 48 hours!
What could be improved
Staff communication, attitude, level of training & awareness of end of life care. Offensive inaccurate remarks by agency staff but also delivery of food by a ward Sister, when patient had no swallow response. Offensive remarks about giving fluid & recovery by transfer nurse, when patient was on end of life care - highly distressing to the family - three of whom are NHS professionals!
Anything else?
It is unusual to treat pneumonia with chloramphenicol in a patient with previously healthy lungs, due to toxicity. Relatives were not informed for seven days of this condition. The hospital missed three deadlines to respond to complaints & have finally replied with an inaccurate account of what happened, & a completely inadequate response.
