"Winstanley Ward"

About: Chorley & South Ribble Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

Was told to report to CIU at 8am. The theatre staff introduced themselves and explained what would happen. I was then walked to the other side of the hospital ward to Winstanley ward, and was told to put on the theatre gown.

From that time on, no other member of staff spoke to me, except Mike from theatre.

When I arrived back onto the ward yet again little was said to me. Then the night staff arrived. The elderly lady sat at the side of me had been sat in her chair all day, and not once did I see any pressure relief, except a brief stand with a physio, or any offer of using the toilet.

She had to have a unit of blood, and she obviously wasn’t happy about this because she pulled the drip out twice, which lost most of the unit of blood. What did the night nurses do? They left her in the dark, and didn’t even bandage her arm so that she was unable to dislodge the infusion.

I was kept awake all night but the night staff never spoke to me. The next morning the staff nurse caring for us actually spoke to her patients!

As an ex-nurse I always put the nurse’s point of view across when someone was complaining about the staff at Chorley Hospital. But never again will I speak up for them or be a patient unless I have to.
