"Post operation care for the elderly is very poor."

About: The Great Western Hospital

What I liked

Surgery was good. Some of the nursing staff were pleasant and provided good patient care.

What could be improved

- Feedback to family was inconsistent. Depending who you spoke too different versions of the truth emerged, it was as though nobody was fully versed in a patients recovery status.

- My mother was discharged with paperwork indicating that she had had a total right hip replacement. In fact she had a total right knee replacement. This information was also passed to the district nurse on my mothers discharge.

-Some staff appeared to be less than committed to their chosen profession, coaching in general public relations would not go amiss.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We are sorry to hear that the information you received about your mother’s condition was not consistent at what must have been a worrying time for all the family. We strive to provide high quality care and a good service to all patients and visitors and we are improving the way we communicate with patients and their families as part of a staff customer service training programme which is being implemented across the Trust.

We will share your comments with the Orthopaedics team so they can look at ways of improving communication with both staff and patients.
