"Concerned about my husband's care"

About: Lincoln County Hospital

(as a carer),

My husband has been in Lincoln County Hospital for three weeks and if I could change anything...it would be to use a different hospital.

Yes, there have been some really good staff, but you only see them when all of the surrounding staff have made so many mistakes, that they realise they are on shaky ground.

My husband has been on three wards in as many weeks, his last move was unannounced and took place at ten thirty at night, and all of his medication went missing, so new prescriptions have been written.

He was referred by a professor, but the first ward doctor he saw did the usual, I don't see what the fuss is. His illness is fairly rare, so rather than admit they don't know anything about it, they just pretend they know.

He has been left cold, shivering, some days his medication has been forgotten, another day a nurse had to admit to him, that she had accidentally given him a double dose.

There have been some excellent nurses, but they are very much in the minority. I feel for them, it must be disheartening to have to work with so many other members of staff who don't seem to care, don't seem to know and aren't interested in finding out. To be honest, I am absolutely disgusted. Lives must be lost due to the neglect of some of staff.

My heart goes out to those patients who can't ask for themselves, I really fear for their well being.

Dear VC - I am so sorry to hear about your experience and the worries that this is causing you. I have passed your concerns onto the staff at Lincoln County and will reply again once I have heard back from them. In the meantime I am concerned as it appears from your story that your husband is still a patient and I would like to be able to help you immediately if possible but would need some more details such as where he is being cared for within the hospital. If possible could you contact me directly at: jennie.negus@ulh.nhs.uk so that we can discuss? Or if you are visiting the hospital this afternoon between 3 and 5 pm I will be in main reception promoting the use of Patient Opinion and would be very happy to meet you?

I acknowledge that this response is a little late in coming and I am sorry for that as well as being extremely sorry for what has clearly been a very difficult and worrying time for both your husband and you during his admission. We try really hard not to have to move patients to different wards; sometimes this is unavoidable and certainly 3 wards in as many weeks is not what we expect and I am very sorry. The care you have described falls way below our expected standards and I will feed this back to the nursing teams and I know they will be disappointed. Thank you again for leaving your feedback – it is very valuable; both good and not so good in helping us to continuously develop and improve our care and services.
