What could be improved

My father attends Haemotology day care department , i have just found out the last time he was there he was told he had a low white cell count and should come back in a week to have it checked .

Having cancer i would think this could be quite serious .

He was ill the week he had to go back so forgot to attend .

A person having cancer is assigned 2 specialist nurses to aid them,one i think is a mcmillan nurse the other works closely with the Hematologist doctor and the patient .

You then have the regular nurses that carry out the treatment etc in the day care unit .

I am not trying to blame anyone else for my father missing an appointment though illness ,but is it really too much to expect to have one of the hematology day care unit staff ring to check on why a person does not attend a possibly vital appointment ,is this not the procedure with cancer patients ?

Nice to know there is such a high level of caring at this department .

Obviously they knew my father was very ill and did not want to disturb him .

In normal circumstances, when a patient does not attend an appointment in Haematology, we would review their medical notes and have a discussion with the specialists involved in their care to determine the next course of action. This could involve contacting the patient and arranging a further appointment, arranging for a specialist nurse assessment in the unit or a district nurse visit at home, or, if they have an imminent appointment in the unit, determining whether this appointment would be within a tolerable period of time.
