About: Thornbury Hospital (Sheffield)

What I liked

Leaving!!!

What could be improved

Everything, I was referred as an NHS patient with a lump in my womb. I arrived for appointment and told it was incorrect, received a call re missing appointment and advised doctor was there waiting for me. At 2nd appointment, doctor didn't have my notes or CT scan, so I gave LTD information as was unsure myself, I was told follow up appointment would follow. 2 weeks later I rang spoke with the GP PA and told doesn't deal with NHS patients, I had to call another number and they call her (ridiculous) after which I was booked in hospital I received a letter with a complex list of procedures that I didn't understand so had to google and speak to a receptionist, whom gave LTD information as she's doesn't know my details nor is a doctor. Advised I would have overnight stay. On the day I arrived, was told to get changed, I asked when operation would be nurse didn't know told to speak with doctor. When he arrived there was no conversation on findings but I put this down to needing to view the womb with a camera which was part of the operation before knowing exactly what next steps were. Told operation at 5pm and would be ready for home at 7pm! I was very confused. Went down for operation, woke up in recovery in agony heard chap saying LTD morphine as doctor wants me home for 7pm! I was in my room for 6:30pm, nurse advised call husband, eat my food then home for 7pm, I've no idea what staff had planned for 7 but obviously really important. Advised nurse I felt sick, but she insisted I try eating, I was then sick in the bathroom. Oh dear! No one wants to clean it! After going to nurses station twice finally my husband got someone to clean which involved mopping up with towels! No mop nor bucket. The room stank, husband requested change of room. I asked for another drink of water and was asked "well, you won't be sick again will you?" I thought was a joke, nurse was serious, so I promised. Staff repeated the 7pm dealing husband pushed that I was staying in as had reaction to

Anything else?

Morphine. After husband left, they eventually moved me rooms. I continued asking for drinks and pain killers at 2 hour intervals. The following morning I saw my doctor for 5 minutes he didn't even fully enter the room, said I'd reacted to morphine and that a lump was removed and coil fitted but would discuss at next appointment in 2 weeks, advised to get painkillers then could go home. I went to reception asked for painkillers told to speak to the nurse with drugs trolley. Approached nurse as told to do, she was very abrupt and told me to go to my room and she would be there shortly, when she came was upset as wasn't on the list as was supposed to go home the night before so I told her I had seen the doctor to call him re pain killers, she came back said I could go home to which I directed her attention to IV still in my arm. I at no point received any chats regarding treatments, side effects what to expect, after care treatments or even what had been found in my womb. I felt vunerable, abandoned and a hinderance to the nurses. I am taking this complaint further as I believe that this hospital obviously do not work as a team, there is communication break down between themselves, patients and the NHS. Needless to say I fully expect to be chasing up my own appointment for my follow up discussions. I cannot stress how as a strong willed, independent career woman I was reduced to feeling so terrible and couldn't wait to leave, and would prefer to never go back.

I’m sorry to hear that this patient was not happy with the service provided at the hospital, and if the patient would like to contact the hospital directly I shall be more than delighted to meet and discuss the concerns.

BMI Thornbury Hospital takes most seriously the welfare and care of patients at all times.
