Photograph of retina of my 7 year old son. My son was give eye drops to dilate his pupil which was done by a nurse who even gave him a cake later.
After an hour we went in to see 2 staff that were going to photograph his retina. This was a terrible experience that would be enough to frighten most children from going to the hospital again.
First off one of the staff (I don't know if they were doctors because they didn't introduce themselves) raised the chair while my son was sitting on it as the other lowered the table, this trapped my son's legs. It then took around twenty minutes to get the photos. All the time my son was kept in an uncomfortable position with lights shining in his eyes. While I appreciate that children may be harder to deal with than adults maybe these they should have been supervised as they seemed clueless on how to deal with children.
I took my other son to have this procedure done (he's 9) and it took a couple of minutes at Boots and he didn't have to wait 6 weeks for an appointment or have eye drops.
Why is the NHS getting this so wrong (and costing more money as well)?
