"Delays and poor communication for my friend at hallamshire hospital"

About: Royal Hallamshire Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a friend),

My friend was recently admitted to the hallamshire hospital for an emergency operation. She was told to come in at 7 am and that she was not allowed to eat or drink anything before she came in. She was told that she would go down to theatre early and would be allowed home later that day. I am a student nurse and was with her all the time. I asked her a few hours later if a doctor or anesthetist had seen her at all or if she had signed anything and she said no. The ward got a phone call saying they were ready for her to go down so they took her down. About 20 mins later she came back, they had got the wrong patient. I then started asking questions about when will someone see her and when will she be going down but they could not answer this. it was not until 3pm that someone finally came to see her, but only then did they realise that she had not drunk anything since the night before. They then had to put a drip in her and she did not go down until half 4! so had been waiting from 7 am till 4.30pm for a 10 min operation. Obviously because she had her op late, she had to stay the night, which was an inconvenience to her. I feel the lack of communication was very poor.
