"Care of my 7 week old baby"

My son is 7 weeks old. He was taken to my GP by myself and partner after showing symptoms of a cold and cough.

She told us it was up to us whether we took him to hospital! (You are the doc, you tell me?) After making the decision to take him to Whiston Hospital, he was seen by A&E who did very little although my baby was very much struggling with his breathing.

They admitted him and kept him in for the night, my poor baby was so exhausted he didn't wake up all night even though I was told to wake him and feed him little and often which was impossible. The next morning we was sent home with nasal drops. I wasn't happy they were discharging him.

After being discharged I took him home and decided upon myself to take him to Alder Hey. The staff there were brilliant and took him straight to a ward were he was kept on a monitor and fed through a tube and we were told he needed complete rest, he had been working that hard to breath he had worn himself out.

After a couple of nights on the ward he got worse although he was on an oxygen headbox he stopped breathing and was sent straight up to HDU (high dependency unit) where he was put onto a ventilator and a drip.

I am writing this story now whilst at Alder Hey because it disgusts me that Whiston sent him home saying he was fine when he clearly wasn't. I could have lost my baby if I hadn't have brought him here. How are Whiston hospital allowed to do this? Alder Hey have done so many tests to get to the bottom of it, Whiston tested for nothing and decided to say it was broncholitis. It turns out he has rsv and rhinovirus, we are still waiting upon some test results.

When it concerns my children Alder Hey will always be my first option. As soon as he is happy and home I will be writing to Whiston hospital for an answer as to why they told me my baby was fine and well enough to go home.
